In a groundbreaking move, OpenAI has successfully raised $110 billion in private funding, marking one of the largest financing rounds ever recorded. The announcement was made early Friday, revealing a significant $50 billion investment from Amazon, alongside $30 billion contributions each from Nvidia and SoftBank, all set against a staggering pre-money valuation of $730 billion. This funding round remains open, with OpenAI anticipating the addition of more investors as it progresses. The company emphasized, "We are entering a new phase where frontier AI transitions from research to everyday use on a global scale." They further noted that future leadership in this space will hinge on the ability to rapidly scale infrastructure to meet rising demand and convert that capacity into reliable products. As a result of this investment, OpenAI is forging important infrastructure partnerships with both Amazon and Nvidia. Historically, a sizable portion of such funding has come in the form of services rather than cash, although specific details on the split were not provided. OpenAI's previous funding round in March 2025 raised $40 billion against a valuation of $300 billion, setting a record at that time. The collaboration with Amazon will see the development of a new "stateful runtime environment" that will enable OpenAI models to operate on Amazon’s Bedrock platform. Additionally, the partnership with AWS will expand its commitment of compute services by $100 billion, building on an earlier agreement of $38 billion. OpenAI has pledged to utilize a minimum of 2GW of AWS Tranium compute as part of the arrangement and is also set to create custom models to enhance Amazon's consumer products. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated, "We have numerous developers and companies eager to deploy services powered by OpenAI models on AWS. Our collaboration to provide stateful runtime environments will redefine the possibilities for customers developing AI applications and agents." Reports suggest that a portion of Amazon's $35 billion investment may depend on the achievement of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or the company's initial public offering by year-end. OpenAI's announcement confirms this funding structure but notes that the additional $35 billion will be released in the coming months upon meeting specific conditions. Details regarding the Nvidia partnership remain less clear, though OpenAI stated it will utilize "3GW of dedicated inference capacity and 2GW of training on Vera Rubin systems" as part of this collaboration. Nvidia's involvement has been a topic of much speculation, particularly following reports of a $100 billion investment that were later scaled back. In January, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang reaffirmed their commitment, stating, "We will invest a great deal of money. I believe in OpenAI. The work that they do is incredible."
