OpenAI closes record-breaking $122 billion funding round as anticipation builds for IPO

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the successful closure of a groundbreaking funding round, achieving a remarkable post-money valuation of $852 billion. This latest funding round totals a staggering $122 billion, surpassing the previously announced $110 billion figure from February. Co-led by SoftBank, the round also saw participation from notable investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and D. E. Shaw Ventures. Since launching its transformative ChatGPT chatbot in 2022, OpenAI has emerged as a key player in the artificial intelligence landscape, rapidly evolving into one of the fastest-growing commercial entities in the world. As of March, ChatGPT boasts over 900 million active users weekly, including more than 50 million paying subscribers. OpenAI stated, "AI is driving productivity gains, accelerating scientific discovery, and expanding what people and organizations can build. This funding provides us with the necessary resources to maintain our leadership in this critical moment." With this monumental funding round completed, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman faces the challenge of validating the company's significant valuation as it prepares for a potential public offering. Recently, the startup has been scaling back on some ambitious spending initiatives and has discontinued certain features and products, such as its short-form video app Sora, in an effort to manage costs. OpenAI reports generating an impressive $2 billion in monthly revenue, having accumulated $13.1 billion in revenue last year. However, the company is still experiencing cash burn and has yet to reach profitability. In February, OpenAI initially announced commitments of $110 billion from strategic investors that formed the foundation of this funding round. Notably, Amazon pledged up to $50 billion, while Nvidia and SoftBank each contributed $30 billion. The additional $12 billion raised in this recent round came from a wider array of investors. For the first time, OpenAI opened up participation to investors through banking channels, attracting $3 billion from individual investors. Microsoft, a long-time partner of OpenAI, also took part, although the specifics of its investment remain undisclosed. As of late last year, Microsoft had already invested over $13 billion in the startup. OpenAI emphasized the significance of this moment, stating, "Opportunities like this are rare. The capital being deployed today is essential for building the foundational infrastructure for intelligence itself. Ultimately, this value will circulate back into the economy, benefiting companies, communities, and individuals alike."
