OpenAI reportedly raises $8.3B at $300B valuation

OpenAI, the innovative company behind ChatGPT, has successfully raised $8.3 billion, achieving a staggering valuation of $300 billion, as reported by The New York Times. This significant funding round is part of OpenAI's ambitious plan to amass a total of $40 billion within the year. This oversubscribed funding round arrived ahead of schedule, highlighting the growing interest from investors eager to be part of OpenAI’s journey. Earlier in March, the firm had raised $2.5 billion from venture capitalists when it first announced its intention to raise the full $40 billion, primarily spearheaded by Softbank. The company has recently reported impressive growth metrics, with annualized revenue reaching approximately $12 billion, a figure that The Times suggests might be closer to $13 billion, with projections aiming for $20 billion by year-end. Additionally, ChatGPT has seen remarkable engagement, surpassing 700 million weekly active users. OpenAI's progress is further supported by external factors, such as the AI Action Plan from the Trump administration and ongoing discussions with Microsoft, which are pivotal for its transition towards becoming a fully-fledged for-profit entity. Leading this latest funding round was Dragoneer Investment Group, with a substantial investment of $2.8 billion. The round also saw participation from a diverse array of new investors, including major private equity firms like Blackstone and TPG, as well as mutual fund manager T. Rowe Price. Other notable participants included Altimeter Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Coatue Management, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management, Founders Fund, Sequoia Capital, Tiger Global, and Thrive Capital. However, some early investors expressed disappointment over their reduced allocations as OpenAI prioritized bringing in new, strategic partners. TechCrunch has reached out to OpenAI for further comments.
