OpenAI has officially been awarded a substantial $200 million contract aimed at delivering advanced artificial intelligence solutions to the U.S. Department of Defense. This significant contract, announced on Monday, is set to last for one year and follows months of discussions regarding OpenAI's partnership with defense technology startup Anduril to implement cutting-edge AI systems for national security initiatives. According to the Defense Department, this contract will involve the development of prototype frontier AI capabilities that are designed to tackle pressing national security issues in both combat and organizational contexts. This marks OpenAI's inaugural contract listed on the Department of Defense's website, highlighting its growing involvement in defense projects. Interestingly, Anduril had previously secured a $100 million defense contract in December, further emphasizing the increasing collaboration between tech firms and the defense sector. Earlier this year, OpenAI's competitor, Anthropic, announced its partnership with Palantir and Amazon to provide AI models to U.S. defense and intelligence agencies. OpenAI's co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, expressed a strong commitment to engaging in national security discussions during a panel at Vanderbilt University, alongside former NSA leader Paul Nakasone. "We have to and are proud to and really want to engage in national security areas," Altman stated. The Defense Department clarified that the contract is specifically with OpenAI Public Sector LLC, with most of the efforts expected to take place in the National Capital Region, which includes Washington, D.C., and surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia. In a broader context, OpenAI is also focusing on expanding its computing capabilities within the U.S. Earlier this year, Altman joined former President Donald Trump to unveil the ambitious $500 billion Stargate project, aimed at bolstering AI infrastructure across the country. Although this new contract represents only a fraction of OpenAI's overall revenue—estimated at over $10 billion annually—it underscores the company's rapid growth and significant market presence. In March, OpenAI completed a $40 billion financing round, achieving a staggering $300 billion valuation. Furthermore, in April, Microsoft, which provides cloud infrastructure to OpenAI, revealed that the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency has approved the use of Azure OpenAI service for handling classified information.
