OpenAI raises $110 billion at $730 billion valuation, partners with Amazon and Nvidia

OpenAI has made headlines by announcing the acquisition of $110 billion in new funding as of February 27, achieving a staggering pre-money valuation of $730 billion. This financial boost comes from significant investments made by SoftBank, Nvidia, and Amazon, reflecting the escalating global demand for artificial intelligence technologies that are increasingly straining computing resources. Among the contributors, SoftBank and Nvidia each invested $30 billion, while Amazon contributed $50 billion. The company has indicated that more financial backers may join this funding round. OpenAI emphasized the necessity of three key elements to meet the surging demand for AI: computing power, distribution capabilities, and capital. In addition to the funding announcement, OpenAI revealed a multi-year strategic alliance with Amazon and an expansion of its ongoing collaboration with Nvidia. This partnership is set to enhance the next-generation computing infrastructure required to support AI advancements. Specifically, OpenAI noted that the Nvidia partnership will provide “3GW of dedicated inference capacity and 2GW of training on Vera Rubin systems,” adding to existing resources on Hopper and Blackwell systems. CEO Sam Altman commented on these alliances, expressing that they represent a concerted effort to transition AI from research into everyday applications. He stated, “We’re pushing the frontier across infrastructure, research, and products to make AI more capable, reliable, and broadly useful,” highlighting the shared vision with partners like SoftBank, Nvidia, and Amazon. OpenAI's products are witnessing a remarkable surge in adoption among both consumers and businesses. ChatGPT, for instance, boasts over 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million consumer subscribers, alongside over 9 million paying business users. The company has reported that January and February are projected to be the largest months for new sign-ups in its history. Additionally, the usage of Codex, OpenAI's software development tool, has surged, with weekly users tripling since the year's start to reach 1.6 million. OpenAI noted that more individuals are now able to create, automate, and deploy software without the need for extensive engineering teams. Furthermore, enterprises are leveraging AI across various functions, including engineering, customer support, finance, and sales, through OpenAI's Frontier platform, which enables organizations to develop and manage AI 'coworkers.' This new valuation also elevates the OpenAI Foundation's stake in the company to over $180 billion, significantly enhancing its capacity to fund philanthropic endeavors in areas like health research and AI safety.
