OpenAI robotics lead Caitlin Kalinowski quits in response to Pentagon deal

Caitlin Kalinowski, the head of OpenAI's robotics division, has stepped down from her position, citing ethical concerns regarding the company's recent agreement with the Department of Defense. In a heartfelt social media message, Kalinowski expressed that her decision was not made lightly. She acknowledged the significant role of artificial intelligence in national security but emphasized the troubling aspects of domestic surveillance without judicial oversight and the potential for autonomous weaponry without human control. Having previously spearheaded the development of augmented reality glasses at Meta, Kalinowski joined OpenAI in November 2024. In her resignation announcement, she clarified that her choice was driven by principles rather than personal conflicts, stating her admiration for CEO Sam Altman and the OpenAI team. Kalinowski further elaborated in a follow-up post on X, expressing concern over the hastiness of the announcement regarding the Pentagon deal. "My primary issue lies in the lack of established governance and safeguards," she stated, highlighting the importance of thorough deliberation for matters of such magnitude. OpenAI confirmed her departure to TechCrunch, reiterating their stance on the Pentagon agreement, which is intended to facilitate responsible AI applications in national security while strictly prohibiting domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. The agreement was unveiled just over a week ago, following failed negotiations between the Pentagon and Anthropic, which sought to impose safeguards against the misuse of AI for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapon systems. After Anthropic was labeled a supply-chain risk by the Pentagon, they announced intentions to contest this designation legally. Meanwhile, major tech players like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have committed to keeping Anthropic’s Claude available for non-defense clients. In the wake of the controversy, OpenAI's reputation has seen a noticeable decline among consumers, with uninstalls of ChatGPT increasing by 295%. Simultaneously, Claude has surged to the top of the App Store rankings, with both ChatGPT and Claude currently holding the first and second positions for free apps in the U.S. App Store as of Saturday afternoon.
