OpenAI takes on Google, Amazon with new agentic shopping system

In a bold move to transform online shopping, OpenAI has launched a new feature that allows ChatGPT users in the U.S. to make purchases directly from Etsy and Shopify during their conversations. This advancement marks a significant evolution in e-commerce, influencing both consumer habits and the platforms that oversee product discovery and transactions. The newly introduced "Instant Checkout" feature is accessible to all logged-in users of ChatGPT, whether they are on the Pro, Plus, or Free plans. Currently, it enables purchases from U.S.-based Etsy sellers, with support for over a million Shopify retailers, including popular brands like Glossier, Skims, Spanx, and Vuori expected soon. Instant Checkout enhances previous shopping capabilities within ChatGPT, which already provided users with relevant product suggestions, images, reviews, and direct merchant links. Now, users can efficiently finalize their purchases without leaving the chat interface by simply tapping "Buy" to confirm their order and payment options, which include Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, or credit cards. This development follows a similar initiative by Perplexity, which introduced in-chat shopping features last year. Microsoft has also ventured into this space, allowing merchants to set up in-chat storefronts through its Copilot Merchant Program. Such seamless shopping experiences could signal a shift away from traditional search engines and e-commerce giants like Google and Amazon, as conversational agents begin to dominate product recommendations and checkout processes. Historically, Google and Amazon have controlled retail discovery, often prioritizing their products or preferred partners in search outcomes, which can disadvantage competitors. OpenAI has stated that the product suggestions it provides are completely organic and ranked based on user relevance, with a nominal fee charged to merchants for completed transactions. In conjunction with the Instant Checkout feature, OpenAI plans to open-source its Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), the technology behind this new shopping capability, in collaboration with Stripe. This initiative aims to enable other merchants and developers to adopt agentic checkout systems. Will Gaybrick, Stripe's president of technology and business, remarked on the importance of re-engineering current commerce systems to create new AI-enhanced shopping experiences. While some users may hesitate to share payment details with ChatGPT, OpenAI assures that order processing and fulfillment are managed by the merchants within their established systems. ChatGPT serves merely as an intermediary, facilitating secure information transfer between users and merchants. By open-sourcing the ACP, OpenAI is likely to increase the prevalence of AI chatbots functioning as virtual storefronts, potentially solidifying its role as a key player in the future of AI-driven commerce. This could set the stage for renewed competition with Google, which has recently introduced its own open protocol for AI-initiated purchases, known as the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).
