OpenAI resets spending expectations, tells investors compute target is around $600 billion by 2030

OpenAI has informed its investors of a new target for total compute expenditures, aiming for approximately $600 billion by 2030. This adjustment comes just months after CEO Sam Altman previously highlighted an ambitious $1.4 trillion in infrastructure investments. Sources familiar with the matter revealed to CNBC that the AI firm is now providing a more realistic figure alongside a clearer timeline for its spending plans, as concerns about the feasibility of such expansive growth have surfaced. The company anticipates generating over $280 billion in revenue by 2030, with contributions expected to be nearly equal from both its consumer and enterprise sectors. This revised spending strategy is designed to align more closely with OpenAI's revenue growth projections. Last year, OpenAI made headlines with a series of substantial infrastructure agreements, collaborating with top chip manufacturers and cloud service providers. Currently, the company is wrapping up a significant funding round that could exceed $100 billion, with roughly 90% of this coming from strategic investors. Notably, Nvidia is reportedly in talks to invest as much as $30 billion, potentially valuing OpenAI at a staggering $730 billion before funding. Other strategic backers in this funding effort include major players like SoftBank and Amazon. In 2025, OpenAI reportedly generated $13.1 billion in revenue, surpassing its initial goal of $10 billion, while its expenses totaled $8 billion, slightly less than the anticipated $9 billion. Established in 2015 as a nonprofit research organization, OpenAI gained significant attention with the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022, which now boasts over 900 million weekly active users—an increase from 800 million in October. In December, OpenAI declared a 'code red' to enhance ChatGPT's capabilities amidst fierce competition from rivals such as Google and Anthropic. Although the chatbot experienced a slowdown in growth last fall, it has since rebounded to achieve record levels of user engagement. Additionally, OpenAI's coding tool, Codex, has surpassed 1.5 million weekly active users, competing directly with Anthropic's Claude Code, which has enjoyed significant adoption in recent months.
