OpenAI disbands mission alignment team, which focused on ‘safe’ and ‘trustworthy’ AI development

OpenAI has officially dissolved its team dedicated to ensuring the safety and trustworthiness of its artificial intelligence systems. This internal unit, tasked with aligning AI development with human values, has seen its members reassigned to various roles within the company. This decision comes alongside the promotion of the team's former leader, who has now taken on the title of Chief Futurist. The alignment team, which was formed in September 2024, played a crucial role in the broader industry effort to ensure that AI functions in accordance with human interests. According to OpenAI’s Alignment Research blog, the goal was to develop systems that consistently adhere to human intent, even in complex and adversarial conditions. The blog emphasizes the need for AI to avoid catastrophic outcomes and to remain controllable and aligned with human values. In a recent blog post, Josh Achiam, the new Chief Futurist, outlined his objectives in this role. He aims to support OpenAI’s mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity by analyzing how AI and AGI will shape the future. Achiam will collaborate with physicist Jason Pruet from OpenAI’s technical team. A company spokesperson confirmed that the rest of the alignment team, consisting of six or seven members, has been redistributed within the organization to continue similar work in their new positions. However, specifics regarding their new assignments remain undisclosed. The spokesperson indicated that the disbandment is part of routine organizational changes typical of a rapidly evolving company. OpenAI had previously established a “superalignment team” in 2023, dedicated to exploring long-term existential risks posed by AI, but that initiative was also discontinued in 2024. Despite the organizational changes, Achiam’s personal website still reflects his former role, highlighting his commitment to ensuring a positive long-term future for humanity amidst advancing AI technologies.
