OpenAI brings back GPT-4o after user revolt

In a significant turnaround, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, announced the reinstatement of GPT-4o within ChatGPT following widespread user dissatisfaction after its removal during last week’s launch of GPT-5. The GPT-4o model is now accessible by default to all paid ChatGPT users, including those with ChatGPT Plus accounts, marking a quick response to the outcry from thousands of users who were discontented with the abrupt loss of their favored models. Altman explained that OpenAI had underestimated the importance of certain features in GPT-4o that users cherished. The company had initially sought to streamline its offerings by eliminating previous AI models with the introduction of GPT-5 on August 7, compelling users to transition to the new model without prior notice. This decision ignited one of the most significant user protests in the platform’s history, culminating in a Reddit thread titled "GPT-5 is horrible," which amassed over 2,000 comments within just a few days. In addition to restoring GPT-4o, OpenAI implemented a series of changes to better accommodate user feedback. The limits on GPT-5's Thinking mode have been increased from 200 to 3,000 messages per week, with an option for additional capacity through a new feature called "GPT-5 Thinking mini" once users reach that threshold. Furthermore, new routing options—labeled "Auto," "Fast," and "Thinking"—have been introduced, allowing users greater control over which GPT-5 variant addresses their inquiries. For Pro users subscribed at $200 a month, Altman assured that other models, including o3, 4.1, and GPT-5 Thinking mini, will soon be accessible via a "Show additional models" toggle in the ChatGPT web settings. However, he clarified that GPT-4.5 will remain exclusive to Pro subscribers due to the high costs associated with GPU resources.
