OpenAI says it’s turned off app suggestions that look like ads

OpenAI is taking steps to enhance user experience following backlash from ChatGPT subscribers over promotional messages that resembled advertisements. Mark Chen, the company's chief research officer, admitted that OpenAI did not meet expectations regarding recent messaging and is committed to refining the interface. The company's response came after users expressed frustration about seeing promotional content for brands like Peloton and Target while using the ChatGPT service. OpenAI clarified that these messages were part of a testing phase for showcasing applications developed on its platform, which was unveiled in October, and emphasized that there was no financial motive behind these promotions. In a recent statement, ChatGPT head Nick Turley addressed the confusion surrounding the supposed ads, asserting that no active advertising tests were occurring. He reassured users that any images they may have encountered were either misleading or not actual ads. Turley promised that should the company ever decide to introduce advertisements, it would be done thoughtfully to maintain user trust. Acknowledging the situation, Chen expressed regret, stating, "Anything that feels like an ad needs to be handled with care, and we fell short." He confirmed that OpenAI has disabled the controversial suggestions while working on improving the model's accuracy. The company is also exploring better user controls to allow customization of these suggestions. Earlier this year, Fidji Simo, a former executive at Instacart and Facebook, joined OpenAI with ambitions to expand its advertising initiatives. However, a recent memo from CEO Sam Altman highlighted a shift in focus towards enhancing ChatGPT's functionality, indicating a delay in advertising developments as the company prioritizes delivering a better user experience.
