In light of growing concerns surrounding the use of AI to create videos of historical figures, OpenAI has decided to halt the generation of videos featuring Martin Luther King Jr. This action comes after the estate of the civil rights icon expressed its disapproval of certain AI-generated portrayals that they deemed disrespectful. On Friday, OpenAI issued a joint statement with the King estate announcing the pause on AI video productions depicting King while emphasizing their commitment to enhancing safeguards for representations of historical figures. Since the launch of their AI video generator, Sora, last month, there has been an influx of short videos created from user prompts, many featuring historical personalities. Unfortunately, some of these representations of King were considered inappropriate by his family. OpenAI stated that while free speech is important, it believes that public figures and their families should have a say in how their likeness is used. As part of the new policy, estates representing historical individuals can now request to opt out of having their likenesses utilized in Sora videos. Previously, OpenAI had rules prohibiting the generation of videos featuring living individuals without consent, but had allowed depictions of deceased figures. This policy change was prompted by Bernice A. King, the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and current CEO of The King Center, who reached out to OpenAI regarding her concerns. Her sentiments echo a wider apprehension about how AI technologies, like Sora, are portraying deceased public figures without the approval of their families. In recent months, users have also created videos featuring other iconic figures such as Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, and Bruce Lee, often resulting in surreal or satirical portrayals that blur the line between homage and disrespect. The estates of various entertainers, including comedian George Carlin and actor Robin Williams, have similarly protested against unauthorized AI recreations of their likenesses. Notably, Carlin's estate took legal action against the creators of the "Dudesy" podcast for producing an AI-generated special that misused his likeness, which was settled earlier this year. Zelda Williams, the daughter of Robin Williams, has also publicly criticized the trend of AI recreations, urging fans to stop sending her AI videos of her father, labeling the trend as distasteful and contrary to his wishes. Bernice A. King's agreement with Zelda's concerns highlights the need for greater respect and control over how the legacies of historical figures are portrayed using emerging technologies.
