OpenAI rejects Apple's trade secret theft claims, says 'no evidence' supports lawsuit

OpenAI has issued a statement in response to Apple's recent lawsuit concerning alleged trade secret theft, asserting that they are "not aware" of any supporting evidence for the claims. On July 10, Apple launched a detailed 40-page lawsuit against the AI leader, accusing the company of misappropriating intellectual property via former employees who are said to have facilitated the rapid advancement of OpenAI's technology. In a response shared with Bloomberg, OpenAI emphasized, "While we take these allegations seriously, we’re not aware of any evidence that this complaint has merit. We believe in fair competition and the freedom for individuals to work where they choose, and we are dedicated to developing innovative technologies that empower people globally." The heart of Apple's lawsuit centers around two former employees, Tang Tan and Chang Liu, who are alleged to have intended to take confidential information from Apple before their departures. The complaint further claims that these individuals encouraged current Apple employees to reveal sensitive information related to unreleased hardware and manufacturing processes during their interviews with OpenAI. Notably, Liu is accused of retaining an Apple-issued laptop after leaving the company and exploiting security vulnerabilities to access confidential documents. The lawsuit argues, "At every level, from members of its Technical Staff to its Chief Hardware Officer, and in coordination with business partners, OpenAI has been stealing Apple's trade secrets and confidential information." Following the filing, OpenAI’s Director of Strategic Communications, Drew Pusateri, took to X to assert that the company has no interest in other firms' trade secrets, reaffirming their focus on innovation that benefits users worldwide. As the case progresses, Apple is seeking a jury trial to examine the evidence and explore additional details during the discovery phase. The tech giant is also pursuing an injunction to prevent OpenAI from utilizing any of its confidential information in the development of AI hardware, as well as financial compensation for any damages incurred from the alleged misuse of trade secrets.
