OpenAI has revealed a striking increase in the use of its AI tools among enterprises, with data showing that ChatGPT message volume has surged eightfold since November 2024. Employees are reportedly saving as much as an hour each day through these tools. This announcement comes just a week after CEO Sam Altman issued an internal alert regarding the competitive threat posed by Google, highlighting the urgency of OpenAI's efforts to establish itself as a leader in enterprise AI. Currently, approximately 36% of businesses in the U.S. have adopted ChatGPT Enterprise, a notable increase compared to 14.3% for its competitor Anthropic, according to the Ramp AI Index. However, a significant portion of OpenAI's revenue is still derived from consumer subscriptions, which are increasingly challenged by Google's Gemini. OpenAI also faces competition from Anthropic, which primarily generates revenue through B2B sales, as well as from various open-weight model providers targeting enterprise customers. To support its ambitious goals, OpenAI has allocated $1.4 trillion toward infrastructure developments over the coming years, making the growth of its enterprise segment crucial for its business model. Ronnie Chatterji, OpenAI’s chief economist, emphasized the importance of consumer engagement but acknowledged that the true economic benefits of transformative technologies often emerge when businesses adopt and scale these innovations. The recent data indicates that larger enterprises are not only increasing their usage of AI but are also integrating these technologies more deeply into their workflows. Notably, organizations utilizing OpenAI's API are consuming 320 times more 'reasoning tokens' than they did a year ago, indicating a shift towards more complex problem-solving with AI tools. This increase may either reflect genuine advancements or an experimental phase where companies are rapidly depleting tokens without achieving lasting value. Moreover, OpenAI has observed a significant rise in the deployment of custom GPTs, which allow companies to streamline their operations by codifying institutional knowledge. The usage of these custom models has increased 19 times this year, now representing 20% of all enterprise messages. An example cited was the digital bank BBVA, which reportedly utilizes over 4,000 custom GPTs, illustrating the potential for companies to tailor AI technology to their specific needs. OpenAI's findings also suggest that employees are increasingly leveraging AI to enhance their skill sets, with three-quarters of surveyed workers stating that AI facilitates tasks they previously could not perform. The report noted a 36% surge in coding-related messages outside of traditional engineering and research teams. However, OpenAI cautioned that increased coding activity could lead to a rise in security vulnerabilities. To address these concerns, OpenAI introduced its agentic security researcher, Aardvark, currently in private beta, aimed at identifying bugs and vulnerabilities. Despite the promising statistics, OpenAI's report highlighted that even among the most engaged ChatGPT Enterprise users, advanced features like data analysis and reasoning tools are underutilized. Lightcap suggested that fully adopting AI systems requires a fundamental shift in mindset and deeper integration with corporate data and processes. A divide in AI adoption was also noted, with 'frontier' workers utilizing more sophisticated tools and saving more time compared to 'laggards.' Lightcap remarked that some firms still view AI as mere software to be purchased and deployed, whereas others are beginning to treat it as an integral operating system for their operations. For OpenAI's leadership, the pressure of substantial infrastructure commitments presents an opportunity for less advanced users to enhance their capabilities, even as the stakes for workers training these systems to replicate their tasks continue to rise.
