OpenAI secures U.S. regulatory green light for GPT-5.6 rollout, Axios report says

OpenAI has received clearance from the U.S. Department of Commerce to launch its highly anticipated GPT-5.6 model, as reported by Axios. The rollout is expected to commence as soon as this week, following additional evaluations and discussions between OpenAI and government representatives. This news comes on the heels of OpenAI's introduction of three new models last month. Initially, the company adopted a cautious approach, providing access solely to a select group of trusted partners to ensure adherence to federal regulations. The identities of these partners remain undisclosed. In a blog post accompanying the announcement, OpenAI emphasized its commitment to broad access and indicated that the GPT-5.6 models—dubbed Sol, Terra, and Luna—would be made generally available in the near future. This decision from the U.S. government arrives as the Trump administration intensifies its AI regulatory framework, aiming to evaluate model capabilities before permitting widespread use. Meanwhile, OpenAI's competitor, Anthropic, experienced a suspension of its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models last month due to compliance with government export controls. Those restrictions were recently lifted, allowing broader access to users globally. As the U.S. maintains stringent oversight over AI advancements, Chinese companies are seizing this moment to strengthen their position in the market. For instance, Zhipu, operating under the name Knowledge Atlas Technology JSC, recently launched its GLM 5.2 model, which is available for free download and can be fine-tuned for use on private servers.
