OpenAI has decided to halt the use of Martin Luther King Jr.'s likeness in its Sora video-generation platform following feedback from the civil rights leader's estate. In a statement released on October 17, the company confirmed its collaboration with The Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr., Inc. to ensure that the late icon’s image is treated with the utmost respect. This decision was prompted by reports of users generating what were deemed "disrespectful depictions" of Dr. King using the AI tool. OpenAI stated, "At King, Inc.’s request, we have paused the generation of content depicting Dr. King as we enhance our safeguards for historical figures." CEO Sam Altman emphasized the importance of allowing public figures and their families to have authority over how their likeness is utilized, despite recognizing strong free speech interests. The company also noted that authorized representatives or estate holders have the option to request the non-use of their likeness in Sora's generated content. OpenAI expressed appreciation for Dr. Bernice A. King, who represented the King estate, along with John Hope Bryant and the AI Ethics Council, for facilitating discussions on the ethical depiction of historical figures in AI. This incident underscores the ongoing ethical discussions surrounding the representation of public figures in generative AI tools, as developers increasingly face scrutiny regarding consent, legacy, and digital likeness rights. In conjunction with this pause, OpenAI has rolled out new updates for the Sora platform, enhancing the tools available to both Pro and standard users. Announced on October 16, Pro users can now utilize "storyboards" directly within the composer on the Sora web platform, aiming to streamline content planning and provide a more visual approach to storytelling. The latest Sora 2 update also extends video generation capabilities; standard users can now create videos up to 15 seconds long, while Pro users can produce videos lasting up to 25 seconds via the web platform.
