OpenAI says it's engaging 'constructively' with state AGs about concerns

OpenAI announced on Friday its commitment to engage positively with state attorneys general who have raised concerns about the company’s practices. A spokesperson emphasized to CNBC that the organization takes these matters seriously. This declaration follows a report by The Wall Street Journal detailing an investigation initiated by a coalition of state attorneys general into OpenAI's operations. The inquiry reportedly includes a subpoena for information related to various aspects of OpenAI's activities, such as advertising, the handling of consumer and health data, and the safety of its models for both minor and senior users. In a statement, the spokesperson highlighted the importance of responsibly harnessing AI technology for the benefit of society, asserting, "AI is a new and powerful technology, and we work every day to safely bring its benefits to people in a responsible way." OpenAI gained significant attention in 2022 with the introduction of its widely-used chatbot, ChatGPT, which now boasts over 1 billion monthly active users. The company’s rapid growth has positioned it among the most valuable private firms globally, with a valuation reaching $850 billion earlier this year. As it prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO), OpenAI recently filed its prospectus confidentially with the Securities and Exchange Commission. However, the surge in OpenAI's popularity has also led to increasing legal challenges. Earlier this month, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a lawsuit against the company, accusing it of releasing an unsafe product, specifically referring to ChatGPT, which he claims poses risks to users. Uthmeier indicated that he anticipates similar actions from other states. Additionally, OpenAI is facing lawsuits from seven families of victims of a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, who allege that the attacker used ChatGPT to strategize the assault. These families contend that the company failed to intervene or prevent the misuse of its technology. The organization is also dealing with a series of wrongful death lawsuits, which assert that interactions with ChatGPT have led some users to develop harmful delusions and, in tragic cases, to take their own lives. In response to these issues, OpenAI’s spokesperson noted that the current version of ChatGPT includes enhanced protective measures for vulnerable populations, directing users to real-world resources and trusted contacts when necessary.
