In a recent CNBC interview, OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, announced that the company is gearing up for an initial public offering (IPO) and is considering allocating a portion of shares specifically for retail investors, alongside institutional buyers. This decision comes as OpenAI anticipates a significant and highly-publicized IPO. During the interview, Friar mentioned that OpenAI gauged interest from everyday investors during its latest funding round and discovered a robust demand from individual participants. This strong response is a driving factor behind the potential reservation of shares for retail investors at the time of the IPO launch. The CFO also referenced the upcoming IPO of SpaceX, which is projected to occur around June 2026, noting that SpaceX plans to allocate roughly 30% of its shares for retail buyers. "Everyone is eager to own a piece of a rocket company; I believe many would also want to invest in ChatGPT. Being a consumer brand certainly enhances that appeal," Friar stated. Recently, OpenAI's valuation soared to $852 billion following a funding round that raised $122 billion, an increase from the $110 billion reported in February, solidifying its position as one of Silicon Valley's most valuable companies. Friar explained the necessity of moving away from continual equity fundraising, emphasizing, "At our scale, raising equity forever doesn’t make any sense." Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the IPO, Friar also expressed caution regarding the timeline for going public, as CEO Sam Altman targets 2026. She flagged potential risks related to significant expenditures and questioned whether OpenAI is adequately prepared for an IPO. Additionally, Friar highlighted the company's ambitious plans to invest over $600 billion in cloud infrastructure over the next five years, with another $200 billion needed before achieving positive cash flow. She pointed out the advantages of going public, which would enable OpenAI to access more capital through options like convertible debt and investment-grade loans, facilitating further investments to enhance its computing capabilities.
