In a significant shift, OpenAI has announced plans to retire several older models, including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini, effective February 13. This strategic decision aims to streamline user experience by concentrating on the newer GPT-5 models, enhancing personalization and creative capabilities. As part of this transition, OpenAI had previously revealed the retirement of GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking. However, it emphasized that there will be no immediate changes to its application programming interface. The company noted a dramatic shift in user preference, with the overwhelming majority now utilizing GPT-5.2—only 0.1% of users continue to engage with GPT-4o daily. Despite this decline, GPT-4o maintained a dedicated user base, prompting OpenAI to temporarily restore access following feedback from subscribers who valued the model's distinct conversational style and warmth. User input has played a crucial role in shaping the development of GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2, leading to enhancements in personality and creativity. Users can now personalize their experience by selecting different styles and tones, such as 'Friendly,' along with adjustments for warmth and enthusiasm. OpenAI is also actively addressing concerns regarding ChatGPT's behavior, working on refining personality traits and creativity while minimizing overly cautious or preachy responses. Furthermore, OpenAI is progressing towards creating an adult-centric version of ChatGPT, which is designed to respect user autonomy while implementing appropriate safeguards. This includes an age prediction feature for users under 18 in various markets. Acknowledging the potential disappointment of users affected by the retirement of GPT-4o, OpenAI expressed that such decisions are challenging but necessary to prioritize model enhancements that benefit the majority of users today.
