OpenAI has decided to put its Stargate initiative in the United Kingdom on hold, citing concerns regarding energy expenses and the current regulatory landscape. Initially announced in September, the ambitious project aimed to deploy up to 8,000 GPUs in collaboration with Nscale and Nvidia. Reports from Politico indicate that the project is now suspended. An OpenAI representative commented, "We continue to explore Stargate U.K. and will move forward when the right conditions such as regulation and the cost of energy enable long-term infrastructure investment." While Nscale refrained from commenting on the matter, Nvidia has also been approached for its input. Despite the pause, discussions between OpenAI and Nscale about the project's future are still ongoing, according to a source familiar with the situation. The spokesperson expressed optimism about the UK’s potential in the AI sector, noting, "London is home to our largest international research hub, and we support the Government's ambition to be an AI leader." In the interim, OpenAI is committed to investing in local talent and expanding its presence in the UK while fulfilling its obligations under a memorandum of understanding with the government to implement frontier AI in public services. This story is still developing, and further updates are anticipated.
