OpenAI has reached a significant agreement to grant over 2 million employees within the U.S. federal executive branch access to ChatGPT and related AI tools for an astonishingly low fee of just $1 per agency for an entire year. This announcement comes on the heels of a recent contract signed by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which allows OpenAI and other competitors like Google and Anthropic to provide their services to federal workers. The employees will utilize ChatGPT Enterprise, a specialized account designed to include access to advanced models and state-of-the-art features, all while ensuring a higher level of data privacy compared to standard consumer accounts. ChatGPT Enterprise has undergone trials in various corporations and large organizations over recent months, showcasing its capabilities. Additionally, these federal workers will enjoy unlimited access to premium features, including Deep Research and Advanced Voice Mode, for a period of 60 days. After the one-year trial, agencies are not bound to continue the service. Earlier this summer, a pilot program had already tested ChatGPT’s functionalities with the U.S. Department of Defense. In a blog post, OpenAI framed this initiative as a public service, emphasizing its role in fulfilling a key element of the Trump Administration’s AI Action Plan. The plan aims to provide powerful AI resources to federal employees, allowing them to reduce time spent on bureaucratic processes and focus more on their mission of serving the American public. This initiative is part of a broader goal to enhance AI infrastructure and efficiency within the government.
