OpenAI ropes in Samsung, SK Hynix to source memory chips for Stargate

In a significant move to bolster its computing capabilities, OpenAI has announced strategic collaborations with leading memory chip manufacturers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. This partnership will focus on producing DRAM wafers essential for the Stargate AI infrastructure initiative, alongside plans to establish data centers in South Korea. The agreements were formalized during a meeting in Seoul that included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Samsung's executive chairman Jay Y. Lee, and SK chairman Chey Tae-won. As part of this initiative, the two companies are set to ramp up production to deliver an impressive 900,000 high-bandwidth memory DRAM chips each month, a significant increase that more than doubles the current production capabilities in the industry. Stargate, a monumental project involving OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, aims to invest $500 billion to construct dedicated AI development data centers across the United States. This latest partnership comes on the heels of a surge in investments aimed at enhancing AI computing resources. Recently, Nvidia announced a staggering $100 billion investment in OpenAI, providing access to over 10 gigawatts of computing power through its advanced AI training systems. In addition, OpenAI is set to collaborate with SoftBank and Oracle to establish five new data centers as part of the Stargate initiative, targeting an increase in total computing capacity to 7 gigawatts. Earlier this month, Oracle also reached an agreement to deliver $300 billion worth of computing power to OpenAI over the next five years. Moreover, OpenAI is working closely with the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT to explore opportunities for AI data centers beyond Seoul and has entered into a separate agreement with SK Telecom for additional infrastructure development. OpenAI is also exploring further collaborations with Samsung's subsidiaries to expand its data center footprint in South Korea. Additionally, as part of their agreement, Samsung and SK Group will incorporate ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI APIs into their operations, showcasing the integration of cutting-edge AI technologies into their business processes.
