OpenAI strikes a Defense Department deal, hours after the Pentagon cuts Anthropic

The Department of Defense is escalating its stance by designating Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a move that could jeopardize the startup's collaborations with other U.S. companies. Altman took to X to express that the agreement with the Department of Defense would involve the deployment of OpenAI's models within their classified networks. He emphasized the importance of safety in their discussions, stating, "The DoD exhibited a strong commitment to ensure safety and a collaborative spirit aimed at achieving optimal outcomes." Central to OpenAI's mission are principles that prohibit domestic mass surveillance and affirm human accountability in the use of force, particularly concerning autonomous weapon systems. Altman noted that the Department of Defense aligns with these principles, which are reflected in their legal and policy framework, and are integral to the newly formed agreement. In a swift response, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to cease engagement with Anthropic amid the ongoing dispute with the Department of Defense. He made a clear statement on Truth Social, asserting, "We don't need it, we don't want it, and will not do business with them again." Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth further elaborated on this directive, stating that no contractor or supplier associated with the U.S. military would be permitted to engage in commercial activities with Anthropic. In response, Anthropic has vowed to contest this designation legally. They released a statement indicating their intent to challenge the supply chain risk label in court, asserting that they had not received any formal communication regarding the negotiations from the Department of Defense or the White House.
