ChatGPT was a homework cheating tool. Now OpenAI is carving out a more official role in education.

In a significant shift towards integrating artificial intelligence in education, OpenAI has announced a partnership with Instructure, the company behind the popular learning management system, Canvas. This collaboration aims to embed generative AI directly into classroom instruction, providing new tools for educators and enhancing the learning experience for students. Since its rise to prominence in 2023, ChatGPT has been used by students for various purposes, including as a tool for completing homework assignments. However, with this new partnership, OpenAI is looking to redefine its role in education by promoting the use of AI in a more constructive and official capacity. The introduction of AI models within Canvas will enable teachers to design innovative classes and assess student performance more effectively while reducing the burden of administrative tasks. Melissa Loble, Instructure's chief academic officer, emphasized that students are eager to learn in ways that feel relevant and engaging. "What this does is it allows them to use AI in a class in an interesting way to help them be more engaged and learn more," she stated in a recent interview. The educational technology market is rapidly evolving, with numerous companies incorporating generative AI into their offerings. Khan Academy, for example, recently introduced Khanmingo, an AI assistant powered by OpenAI technology. At the forefront of Canvas’s transformation is a new feature known as the LLM-Enabled Assignment. This tool empowers educators to create interactive, chat-based learning experiences tailored to individual student needs using OpenAI's advanced large language models. Leah Belsky, VP of Education at OpenAI, remarked on the potential of this partnership, stating that it will help educators deliver richer, personalized, and connected learning experiences. The aim is to create a learning environment that aligns with how students engage with technology today, mimicking the conversational style of ChatGPT while maintaining academic rigor. For instance, educators can create an AI chatbot representing historical figures, like economist John Maynard Keynes, allowing students to engage in discussions about economic theories and their implications. This AI-driven dialogue not only enhances learning but also provides real-time insights into student understanding, with conversations assessed against predefined educational objectives. While the integration of AI in assessment may raise concerns among some educators and parents, Loble reassured that teachers will maintain complete control over grading and assessments. Additionally, Instructure has developed an AI assistant designed to alleviate administrative burdens for teachers. For example, if a student needs an extension due to unforeseen circumstances, the AI can help adjust deadlines across their classes and even assist in responding to parent inquiries. This innovative approach aims to blend the efficiency of AI with the essential human element of teaching, ensuring that while technology plays a crucial role, educators remain at the helm of the learning process.
