OpenAI signs MoU with IndiaAI Mission to launch OpenAI Academy in India

In a significant move for artificial intelligence education, OpenAI has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the IndiaAI Mission to create the OpenAI Academy in India. This collaboration aims to provide AI training materials through both the OpenAI Academy and the IndiaAI FutureSkills portal, making resources available in English, Hindi, and four regional languages. This initiative marks OpenAI's first international expansion. According to Jason Kwon, OpenAI's Chief Strategy Officer, India boasts the second-largest user base of ChatGPT, positioning it among the leading nations in AI technology development. During the event, Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, pointed out that a significant hurdle in promoting AI in India has been limited access to computing power. However, he highlighted the provision of approximately 34,000 GPUs (graphics processing units) at competitive rates—less than a dollar per hour—which is considerably lower than global market prices. Singh also mentioned that the AI Kosh platform provides extensive datasets across multiple sectors, along with tools, models, and a sandbox environment for innovators to develop their AI solutions. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting as well as Electronics and Information Technology, emphasized through a virtual statement that this partnership represents a crucial step towards democratizing technology and knowledge access. OpenAI's initiative follows Kwon's recent global outreach to engage with policymakers on AI regulation and implementation. Additionally, last month, OpenAI announced data residency for Indian users, ensuring that data from ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the OpenAI API platform will now be stored locally in India. This week, OpenAI also expanded its AI for Impact Accelerator Program to India, which is part of the OpenAI Academy initiative. Eleven nonprofit organizations in India will benefit from a new allocation of API credits, increasing the total value of technical grants to $150,000. This initiative is supported by philanthropic partners, including The Agency Fund, Tech4Dev, and Turn.io, and aims to provide nonprofits with essential technical support, structured learning opportunities, and early access to OpenAI tools to facilitate AI-driven solutions for social good.
