OpenAI taps Google Cloud to power ChatGPT as demand surges, reducing reliance on Microsoft: Report

In a surprising twist in the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, OpenAI has formed an alliance with Google Cloud to secure the computing power necessary for its expanding operations. This partnership, which was finalized in May after extensive negotiations, introduces Google’s cloud services into OpenAI’s infrastructure, which has predominantly relied on Microsoft’s Azure until now. This collaboration underscores a significant shift as major players in AI seek innovative ways to address the escalating demands of generative AI technology. Despite their rivalry, OpenAI's ChatGPT has emerged as a formidable competitor to Google Search, leading both companies to recognize the urgent need for robust, scalable computing resources. OpenAI’s computing needs have skyrocketed since ChatGPT gained widespread popularity in late 2022, with the company now on track for a $10 billion annual revenue. OpenAI is aggressively pursuing infrastructure projects such as the ambitious $500 billion Stargate initiative, in collaboration with SoftBank and Oracle, alongside significant agreements with CoreWeave. Furthermore, OpenAI is in the process of developing its own custom AI chips, with plans for final design approvals later this year. Until recently, Microsoft was OpenAI’s exclusive infrastructure partner, but both companies are now negotiating adjustments to their existing multibillion-dollar agreement, which includes Microsoft’s equity share in OpenAI. Sources indicate that OpenAI’s previous reliance on Microsoft had delayed the establishment of its partnership with Google. As Google also begins to commercialize its AI hardware, such as tensor processing units (TPUs), which were once used solely for internal operations, it aims to offer competitive AI-focused cloud solutions. However, Google’s CFO, Anat Ashkenazi, acknowledged earlier this year that the company is still struggling to meet the full demand for its services.
