Kate Rouch, the marketing lead at OpenAI, has revealed that she will be temporarily stepping down from her position for three months as she undergoes treatment for invasive breast cancer. In a heartfelt LinkedIn update, Rouch shared that Gary Briggs, the former Chief Marketing Officer of Meta, will step in as interim marketing head during her absence. In her post, Rouch reflected on her journey, stating, "Earlier this year — just weeks into my dream job — I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer." She has been managing her role at OpenAI while undergoing chemotherapy at UCSF for the past five months. Rouch described this period as one of the most challenging times for not only herself but also for her husband and their two young children. Despite the daunting diagnosis, Rouch conveyed optimism about her future, mentioning that her prognosis is “excellent” and she is expected to make a full recovery. She emphasized the importance of awareness, stating, “1 in 8 American women will get invasive breast cancer,” and noted that approximately 42,000 women die from the disease each year, with rising rates among younger women. Rouch shared her personal story to raise awareness and encourage women to prioritize their health amidst life’s demands. "A routine exam saved my life. It could save yours too," she urged, highlighting the critical role of early detection. Joining OpenAI in December, Rouch previously held the position of CMO at Coinbase and has an extensive background in marketing for major platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook.
