What smart people are saying about OpenAI's new company to help businesses deploy AI

OpenAI is intensifying its focus on the enterprise sector with the introduction of a new subsidiary, the OpenAI Deployment Company. This initiative aims to assist organizations in building and implementing AI systems effectively. The launch was announced on Monday, with OpenAI collaborating alongside 19 notable companies, including Goldman Sachs, Brookfield, and Bain Capital. The new company is set to start with an impressive initial investment exceeding $4 billion, boasting a pre-money valuation of $10 billion. In a strategic move, OpenAI has also acquired Tomoro, a consulting and engineering firm specializing in applied AI. This acquisition will provide the new venture with a solid base of approximately 150 Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs). FDEs, which gained popularity through companies like Palantir, are becoming increasingly crucial in the AI landscape as larger enterprises seek customized AI solutions. Industry experts have begun to weigh in on the significance of this new venture. Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, emphasized the pressing need for specialized services and forward-deployed engineers. He noted the complexity involved in making AI integration successful, stating, "That’s an insane amount of technical and domain-specific process work to be done to make this all happen." Levie pointed out that businesses must modernize their infrastructure and data, ensuring they are aligned with AI capabilities, which poses significant technical challenges. Sunny Madra, Vice President at Nvidia, echoed Levie’s sentiments, asserting that services and solutions are pivotal for gaining enterprise acceptance. Yan-David "Yanda" Erlich from B Capital remarked that many organizations are still unprepared to harness the latest advancements in AI. He stated, "The OpenAI Deployment Company is designed to help close the gap between frontier capability and real-world implementation." Dean W. Ball, a senior fellow at the Foundation for American Innovation, speculated on the implications for robotics, suggesting that this could reshape the financial landscape for technology adoption. Carolina Milanesi, an established tech analyst, raised questions about Microsoft’s lack of involvement in the services sector, especially as OpenAI steps into this role. Matthew Lam, strategic projects lead at Handshake AI, highlighted the increasing demand for FDEs, indicating a significant shift in the job market driven by this new enterprise-focused approach from OpenAI.
