OpenAI's merch store offers a glimpse inside the company's vibe

In a bold move to celebrate its tenth anniversary, OpenAI has unveiled a merchandise store, allowing fans to don items featuring ChatGPT. The newly launched 'OpenAI Supply Co.' was announced on the company's X feed, revealing a selection of gear that reflects the organization's culture and achievements. This merchandise outlet appears to cater primarily to OpenAI employees, requiring a login with a company email. Interestingly, this marks the first opportunity for non-employees to purchase items directly from the company. Enthusiastic fans quickly responded, with the social media announcement racking up over 3,000 likes within just 15 hours. Many sizes of the available apparel sold out almost immediately, leaving larger customers disappointed. The merchandise offers a sneak peek into OpenAI’s identity, featuring creative items such as Pokémon-style trading cards. These cards highlight various aspects of the company's work, including Sora 2, GPT-5, and the OpenAI Blossom. The theme of the merchandise reflects the ongoing discussions surrounding artificial general intelligence (AGI), a significant milestone that many in the AI community are striving to achieve. One standout shirt proclaims, "AGI that benefits all of humanity," echoing OpenAI’s foundational principles. The selection of hats further showcases the company’s ethos, with designs including Sora beanies and caps emblazoned with the word "research." One cap even features the chatbot's phone number, 1-800-CHATGPT, which is still operational. A variety of caps are available, with designs that nod to early 2000s nostalgia and signify OpenAI’s San Francisco roots. Notably, there is a cap that reads "Thinking deeply," launched in honor of OpenAI's reasoning model, reminiscent of Anthropic’s popular 'thinking' caps that have become symbols of status within the AI community. The excitement for this merchandise release indicates a strong appetite among fans, some of whom have already created their own unofficial merchandise. Just before the anniversary announcement, a developer suggested that OpenAI should open its store to the public, leading to the official link being shared in response. As the buzz continues, it remains to be seen whether the merchandise will become a new status symbol within the tech world, reminiscent of other unique items associated with the AI boom.
