OpenAI's new $230 device is for Codex power users

OpenAI has unveiled its latest hardware offering, the Codex Micro, designed specifically for power users of its AI coding tool, Codex. This compact keyboard marks OpenAI's first foray into hardware, crafted in collaboration with Work Louder, a Canadian-Italian manufacturer known for high-quality keyboards and accessories. Priced at $230, the Codex Micro aims to enhance the coding experience by providing a tactile interface for developers. It features six illuminated keys that indicate the status of the AI agent, enabling users to switch effortlessly between multiple agents. Additionally, the device includes a joystick for navigation and a dial that allows users to fine-tune the reasoning level of their AI. The keyboard also boasts customizable shortcut keys tailored for common Codex actions, including a voice recorder for those who prefer to send audio prompts to their AI agents. Work Louder offers two mechanical key options for the Codex Micro: a clicky version and a silent variant, catering to different user preferences. As OpenAI intensifies its focus on AI coding, the introduction of the Codex Micro underscores the company's commitment to this sector. The Codex product line has already seen significant traction, with recent reports indicating that Codex and ChatGPT Work together have amassed 8 million active users. This new device not only solidifies OpenAI's investment in Codex but also signifies a broader strategy to enhance user engagement and streamline coding workflows.
