OpenAI unveils GPT-5.5 for complex AI-driven tasks, strengthens ‘super app’ roadmap

OpenAI, under the leadership of Sam Altman, has unveiled its latest AI model, GPT-5.5, which promises significant enhancements in various functions such as writing, debugging code, conducting online research, and analyzing data. The company touts this new model as the most sophisticated and user-friendly version to date, equipped with expanded capabilities and features. Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, mentioned that the introduction of GPT-5.5 marks a pivotal step towards the development of a 'super app.' This model is characterized by substantial advancements in 'agentic and intuitive computing,' showcasing its potential to tackle complex tasks with minimal human oversight. GPT-5.5 is designed to manage intricate real-world scenarios, transcending traditional question-answering to facilitate long, multi-step workflows that encompass coding, research, and various productivity tools. OpenAI emphasizes the model’s ability to plan, utilize different tools, verify its outputs, navigate uncertainties, and persist in tasks. The model is particularly noted for its agentic capabilities, rendering it invaluable for enterprise applications in sectors like engineering, finance, legal analysis, and scientific research. OpenAI asserts that GPT-5.5 is more autonomous than its predecessor, enhancing its utility in practical environments. Regarding performance, GPT-5.5 exhibits marked improvements in coding and software engineering tasks, achieving an accuracy rate of 82.7% on the Terminal-Bench 2.0 and 58.6% on SWE-Bench Pro. Additionally, the model features enhanced token efficiency, enabling it to execute tasks with reduced computational resources, thus increasing speed and cost-effectiveness. In the realm of knowledge work, GPT-5.5 scores 78.7% in the OSWorld-Verified benchmark and an impressive 98.0% in the Tau2-bench Telecom without the need for prompt tuning. The rollout of GPT-5.5 is set to reach Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users within ChatGPT and Codex, with the GPT-5.5 Pro also scheduled for availability soon via the API.
