OpenAI announces ChatGPT Go in India for ₹399 a month: Here's what you get

OpenAI has unveiled a new subscription option for its ChatGPT service, named ChatGPT Go, which is available for ₹399 per month. This initiative marks a significant step in making AI technology more accessible, particularly by addressing concerns related to affordability and local payment preferences in India. Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, emphasized that the Go tier is initially launching in India before it is rolled out to a global audience. He pointed out that Indian users had consistently requested a more economical pricing structure and support for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which is the most popular digital payment method in the country. With the ChatGPT Go plan, subscribers will enjoy significantly enhanced capabilities, featuring ten times the limits for messages, image generation, and file uploads compared to the free version, along with extended memory length. However, exclusive benefits such as priority access during peak times and early access to new features will still be reserved for the higher-tier Plus and Pro plans. In a move to streamline user experience, OpenAI has transitioned all its subscription tiers to be priced in Indian rupees, thus eliminating any confusion surrounding currency conversion. The available plans now include the free tier, the new Go plan at ₹399, the Plus plan at ₹1,999, and the Pro plan at ₹19,999 per month. This launch is part of OpenAI's strategic focus on the Indian market, which is rapidly becoming a key player in the generative AI landscape. Earlier this month, co-founder and CEO Sam Altman indicated that India could soon emerge as the company's largest market by volume. This new offering also positions OpenAI competitively against its rivals; for instance, Google’s AI Pro plan is priced at ₹1,950 per month, while Microsoft’s Copilot Pro is set at ₹2,000 per month. The ChatGPT Go thus presents a more budget-friendly alternative for students, freelancers, and professionals who seek greater usage flexibility without incurring the costs associated with higher-tier subscriptions. This announcement marks OpenAI's third significant development within a month, following the introduction of GPT-5 and the launch of ChatGPT aimed at students. With the introduction of the Go plan, OpenAI is striving to bridge the gap between free and premium services, ultimately making AI tools more accessible to everyday users.
