OpenAI is set to distribute $40.5 million among over 200 nonprofit organizations by year-end, following a public call for applications in September. This marks the first significant wave of contributions since the organization transitioned its nonprofit arm into the OpenAI Foundation last October. The company has pledged a staggering $25 billion towards various initiatives, including funding health research and promoting AI resilience—efforts aimed at mitigating the risks associated with artificial intelligence technologies. While OpenAI has yet to specify the timeline for disbursing these funds, it previously committed to granting $50 million in July. This decision followed the advice of an advisory commission that provided insights on how OpenAI could best fulfill its mission of ensuring safe advancements in AI for the greater good. In the coming months, OpenAI will also reveal an additional $9.5 million in grants, informed by recommendations from its board of directors. Notably, the funding being offered is unrestricted, allowing nonprofits the flexibility to allocate it according to their specific needs. However, OpenAI has encouraged applicants to submit projects that bolster AI literacy, enhance civic life, or create economic opportunities. Interestingly, many of the selected grantees are not focused solely on technology. Instead, the list includes a diverse array of organizations such as journalism entities, dance companies, and community groups. Originally established as a nonprofit in 2015, OpenAI later created a for-profit subsidiary that has rapidly ascended to become one of the world’s most valuable startups. After years of seeking to distance itself from its nonprofit origins to attract investors, OpenAI formalized its transition to a public benefit corporation last October. Despite this change, the nonprofit board of directors continues to hold the highest authority in decision-making. With more than 3,000 applications submitted for this initial funding round, OpenAI engaged a panel of advisors to oversee the application review process, ensuring a thorough evaluation of all proposals.
