An OpenAI exec said the company is using a new engineering role to get big customers' projects going fast

In a bold move to enhance its global operations, OpenAI is launching a new engineering position aimed at fast-tracking significant customer projects. Oliver Jay, the company’s international managing director, announced the initiative during the Fortune Brainstorm AI 2025 conference held in Singapore. The newly created role, termed 'forward-deployed engineer,' is designed to assist clients in effectively implementing their AI solutions. Jay emphasized that this approach allows OpenAI to deploy their engineers directly with clients, facilitating the transition from trial phases to full-scale production. He stated, "We see this as a targeted method to expedite the deployment of advanced AI into practical applications." This innovative strategy stems from OpenAI's recognition of a critical gap in client needs over the past year. Jay pointed out that AI implementation is inherently more complex than traditional cloud software, necessitating specialized techniques to ensure accuracy and model evaluation as projects scale. As part of its expansion efforts, OpenAI is establishing a stronger presence in Asia, with new offices in major cities like Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul. The company has reported significant growth in its ChatGPT user base in South Korea, highlighting its increasing influence in the region. Colin Jarvis, who leads OpenAI's forward-deployed engineering division, announced on LinkedIn that the focus of this team is to facilitate customer transitions to production, whether through innovative applications of technology or scaling existing solutions. Job opportunities for engineering managers and forward-deployed engineers are currently available in various cities, including New York and London, with competitive salaries ranging from $220,000 to $280,000, not including equity. The forward-deployed engineer model has emerged as a pivotal strategy for startups, providing them with the skills and experience needed to secure enterprise deals. According to a former engineer from Palantir, this role is akin to a 'founder preparation boot camp' that equips individuals with the necessary skills to navigate both client relations and technical product development. Furthermore, insights shared by Y Combinator partners indicate that this role positions startups to close substantial deals with large enterprises, creating a competitive edge over established giants in the tech industry.
