OpenAI announces new Guaranteed Capacity offering for customers to secure compute

On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled a new initiative named Guaranteed Capacity, designed to provide customers with long-term access to the computational resources essential for their artificial intelligence projects, agents, and workflows. This offering allows clients to commit for periods of one, two, or three years, with increasing discounts based on the length of their commitment, as detailed on the company's website. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the growing demand for reliable capacity, noting that as AI models continue to improve, a capacity shortage is likely to persist. In a post on X, he expressed optimism about this new program, hoping it would facilitate better planning for OpenAI and create a mutually beneficial situation. The Guaranteed Capacity will be available until the current allocation is exhausted, with plans for future offerings. In the realm of artificial intelligence, 'compute' refers to the powerful resources necessary for training and deploying extensive AI models, which are notoriously costly and challenging to scale. OpenAI has informed investors of its ambitious target of approximately $600 billion in total compute expenditures by 2030, as reported by CNBC. The company, currently valued at over $850 billion by private investors, is actively seeking to enhance its revenue stream as it prepares for a potentially significant IPO later this year. The company stirred some concerns on Wall Street after securing a series of multi-billion-dollar compute agreements late last year, raising questions about its capacity to finance such substantial infrastructure developments. Altman has consistently dismissed these worries, asserting in a November post on X that OpenAI anticipates reaching sales in the hundreds of billions by 2030. The introduction of the Guaranteed Capacity program may play a crucial role in shaping the future of OpenAI's compute business model. He assured that sufficient capacity would remain available for key offerings such as ChatGPT and its coding assistant, Codex.
