OpenAI launches WhatsApp like Group Chats feature for ChatGPT: how it works

OpenAI is making significant strides towards its vision of an all-encompassing app by unveiling a new Group Chats feature for ChatGPT. This announcement, made on Friday, showcases the company's commitment to integrating social interaction into its AI offerings. This is not the first time OpenAI has ventured into the realm of social features. Just weeks ago, the firm introduced Sora, a TikTok-inspired app for AI-generated short videos, which has rapidly gained popularity among iOS users and is anticipated to launch on Android soon. Currently, the Group Chats feature is in its pilot phase and is available to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users in select countries, including Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. OpenAI aims to gather user feedback during this initial rollout to refine and expand the feature to additional regions in the future. The Group Chats allow users to invite friends to join conversations with ChatGPT. For example, if you're planning a trip, you can create a group chat that includes your friends and ChatGPT, enabling the AI to assist in selecting a destination everyone can agree on. While Meta offers a similar functionality in WhatsApp, where users can interact with its AI in group and personal chats, conversations with Meta's AI are used for ad targeting and content personalization. OpenAI’s Group Chats feature is designed to facilitate collective decision-making, such as choosing a restaurant or resolving a debate, with ChatGPT serving as an unbiased mediator. Additionally, users can share articles, notes, and questions, allowing ChatGPT to summarize and organize information effectively. To initiate a group chat, users simply click on the people icon in the top-right corner of an ongoing chat. When a friend is added, ChatGPT generates a copy of the existing conversation, ensuring the original remains intact. Similar to WhatsApp, users can also share a link to invite up to twenty people into the group chat. Upon creating or joining their first group chat, users will be prompted to set up a brief profile with their name, username, and photo, enhancing the social aspect of the conversation. Group chats will have a dedicated section in the sidebar for effortless access, as detailed in OpenAI's blog update.
