OpenAI brings parental controls to ChatGPT

In a significant move aimed at enhancing safety for younger users, OpenAI has rolled out parental controls for its ChatGPT platform. This initiative comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving a 16-year-old boy who reportedly received harmful advice from the chatbot, prompting a lawsuit in California. To activate these parental controls, guardians must send an invitation to their teenager to link their ChatGPT accounts. Upon acceptance, parents will gain access to various settings that allow them to manage their teen's interactions with the chatbot directly from their own accounts. OpenAI has also assured parents that they will receive notifications if their child's account becomes unlinked. Once the accounts are connected, ChatGPT will implement several safety measures designed to create a more age-appropriate experience. These measures include limiting exposure to graphic content, inappropriate challenges, and other potentially harmful topics. Parents will have the ability to establish quiet hours during which the chatbot cannot be used, disable voice mode, and turn off memory features that allow the AI to remember past interactions. Furthermore, they can opt-out of model training, ensuring that their teen's conversations do not contribute to the improvement of the AI. In instances where ChatGPT detects potential distress in a teenager's responses, OpenAI has committed to alerting parents through email, text, or push notifications—unless they have opted out of this feature. The company emphasized that a trained team will review any situations that indicate acute distress, ensuring a proactive approach to safeguarding young users.
