On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the implementation of a new age prediction model within its ChatGPT consumer plans. This initiative aims to assist the company in identifying users under the age of 18. The model utilizes a mix of account-level and behavioral signals to make its assessments. Key indicators include user engagement patterns, the duration of account existence, active hours, and the age that users have declared. In recent months, OpenAI has introduced various safety features as it faces increasing scrutiny regarding user protection, particularly for minors. The company, alongside other tech firms, is under investigation by the FTC regarding the potential negative impacts of AI chatbots on children and teens, with OpenAI named in several wrongful death lawsuits linked to this issue. When the age prediction model indicates a user may be under 18, ChatGPT will automatically implement safeguards to limit exposure to sensitive content, such as instances of self-harm. If users believe they have been misidentified as underage, they can utilize the identity verification service, Persona, to regain full access to the platform. Persona is also employed by other technology companies, including Roblox, which has faced similar pressures to enhance child safety measures. In August, OpenAI had already announced plans for parental controls, aimed at helping parents understand and manage their teens' interactions with ChatGPT. Following this, the company launched these parental controls and began developing the age prediction system. Additionally, OpenAI brought together a panel of eight experts in October to offer guidance on how AI might impact users' mental health, emotions, and motivation. OpenAI confirmed that it will continually refine the accuracy of its age prediction model, with plans to roll it out in the European Union soon to meet regional requirements.
