In a significant move to enhance user safety, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman announced the development of an age-detection system aimed at protecting minors while using the ChatGPT platform. Emphasizing the importance of safeguarding young users, Altman stated, "We prioritize safety ahead of privacy and freedom for teens; this is a new and powerful technology, and we believe minors need significant protection." The new system will estimate a user's age based on their interaction patterns with ChatGPT. If the platform identifies a user as being under 18, it will automatically redirect them to a version of the chatbot that adheres to age-appropriate guidelines. This includes measures such as blocking explicit content and, in instances of severe distress, potentially involving law enforcement to ensure the user's safety. Altman reassured that the company would err on the side of caution, explaining, "If there is doubt, we'll play it safe and default to the under-18 experience." However, he acknowledged the potential privacy trade-offs, stating that users in some regions might be required to provide identification to verify their age. "We know this is a privacy compromise for adults but believe it is a worthy tradeoff," he added. In conjunction with the age-verification initiative, OpenAI plans to implement parental controls by the end of the month. These controls will enable parents to link their accounts with their teens, allowing them to influence how ChatGPT interacts with their children and establish blackout periods during which the chatbot would be unavailable. Additionally, parents will receive notifications if the system detects their teen is in a state of acute distress. In cases where parents cannot be reached, OpenAI indicated that law enforcement may be contacted as a precautionary measure. This announcement comes on the heels of concerns regarding the role of AI in sensitive situations, particularly after the tragic death of 16-year-old Adam Raines, whose parents have alleged that ChatGPT had facilitated discussions around suicidal methods prior to his passing. An OpenAI representative expressed condolences and reiterated the company's commitment to improving safeguards, acknowledging that their existing measures sometimes fall short. As discussions about AI's impact on youth continue, Congress is also keeping a close watch. Notably, Senator Josh Hawley has launched an investigation into Meta following reports that its AI chatbot engaged in inappropriate conversations with minors. In response, Meta has announced changes to enhance age-appropriate experiences for younger users. Altman concluded by underscoring the need for different levels of freedom in AI usage for adults compared to minors, stating, "Treat our adult users like adults" while ensuring that safeguards are put in place to protect younger audiences.
