OpenAI is set to test advertisements on its ChatGPT platform in the near future, coinciding with the launch of its budget-friendly subscription option, ChatGPT Go, in various markets. This initiative aims to enhance global access to the chatbot, particularly for logged-in adult users in the United States, while maintaining an ad-free experience for its Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers. Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, emphasized the importance of making AI tools accessible to everyone. "AI is reaching a point where everyone can have a personal super-assistant that helps them learn and do almost anything," she stated in a recent blog post. The goal is to ensure equitable access to these advanced technologies, thereby preventing existing societal divides from widening. The ChatGPT Go service, which was rolled out in August to 171 countries, is now available in the US for a monthly fee of $8. This subscription provides users with expanded features, including messaging, image generation, file uploads, and memory capabilities. To support this expansion, OpenAI will introduce advertising, allowing more individuals to utilize the service with fewer restrictions or at no cost. Simo explained that the forthcoming ads will not interfere with ChatGPT's responses, as they will be distinctly marked and separated from the chatbot's organic replies. "You need to trust that ChatGPT's responses are driven by what's objectively useful, never by advertising," she reassured users, highlighting the company's commitment to privacy. The ads will first appear at the bottom of ChatGPT's responses when relevant products or services are identified. Users will have the option to dismiss these ads, learn why they are displayed, or opt-out of personalized advertising. Importantly, OpenAI will not show ads to users under 18 and will avoid placing advertisements near sensitive areas, such as health or politics. OpenAI remains focused on maintaining strong enterprise and subscription services while diversifying its revenue streams through advertising. Simo reiterated the company's long-term vision, stating, "Our focus is on creating products that millions of people and businesses find valuable enough to pay for."
