OpenAI is set to roll out banner advertisements in ChatGPT, targeting users of both the free version and its new $8 monthly subscription plan, ChatGPT Go, which is now available globally. The testing phase is expected to commence in the coming weeks, following a successful launch in India in August 2025, and subsequent expansion to over 170 countries. According to a recent blog post from OpenAI, these ads will appear at the bottom of responses when relevant products or services are available. The advertisements will be clearly marked and distinct from the regular content, designed to resemble blocked sections within the chat interface, complete with images and promotional text. For example, users seeking travel recommendations in Mexico may encounter holiday-related ads. Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of applications, emphasized the company's commitment to creating a diverse revenue model, where advertising could contribute to making intelligent solutions more accessible. This move comes on the heels of OpenAI's previous introduction of shopping features within ChatGPT Search in April 2025, which, at the time, were described as product recommendations rather than advertisements. OpenAI’s venture into advertising mirrors trends in the AI industry, as other companies like Google have also begun integrating ad services into their chatbot experiences through collaborations with AI startups, marking a significant shift in how AI platforms may monetize their services in the future.
