AI talent war: OpenAI scrambles to hike pay as top talent flees to Meta— Report

In a dramatic turn of events, OpenAI is undertaking immediate measures to retain its top talent amidst a significant wave of departures to Meta Platforms. Reports from various technology sources indicate that the organization is reevaluating its compensation strategies to keep its leading researchers from leaving. Mark Chen, the Chief Research Officer at OpenAI, expressed concern in an internal memo dated June 28, stating, "It feels like someone is breaking into our house and stealing something." He highlighted the leadership's commitment to addressing the talent drain, stating, "We are readjusting compensation and seeking creative ways to recognize and reward the best talent." The urgency for these changes follows Meta's aggressive recruitment strategy aimed at OpenAI researchers, particularly as it establishes its Superintelligence Lab. According to The Information, Meta recently onboarded four OpenAI researchers, including Shengjia Zhao and Jiahui Yu, and has previously attracted others from OpenAI’s Zurich office, a move reported by The Wall Street Journal. Meta's offers have reportedly reached staggering amounts, with some engineers being courted with packages nearing $100 million, a figure OpenAI CEO Sam Altman termed as "crazy" during a recent podcast. In just a matter of weeks, at least eight senior researchers from OpenAI have made the switch to Meta, igniting concerns about employee morale and project stability within the company. OpenAI's leadership is actively working to curb this talent exodus. In Chen's memo, he indicated that he, along with Altman and other executives, are "working day and night" to engage with employees who have received enticing offers from competitors. Altman has publicly reassured staff that the company is determined to remain competitive amid escalating recruitment battles. OpenAI management has cautioned employees to be vigilant regarding the intense recruitment pressure and the quick turnaround of job offers, as some have been approached during scheduled company breaks. This conflict between OpenAI and Meta marks a significant chapter in the ongoing AI arms race. Earlier this month, Meta made headlines with a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, enlisting its founder, Alexandr Wang, to spearhead its superintelligence initiatives, according to Bloomberg. Mark Zuckerberg has articulated Meta's ambition to develop AI that can "surpass human capabilities," emphasizing the high stakes involved in this talent struggle.
