OpenAI will apply new restrictions to ChatGPT users under 18

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, revealed on Tuesday a series of updated user policies aimed at enhancing safety for ChatGPT users who are minors. Emphasizing the importance of protecting young users, Altman stated, "We prioritize safety ahead of privacy and freedom for teens." He acknowledged the need for significant measures, especially regarding sensitive subjects such as self-harm and sexual topics. Under the revised guidelines, ChatGPT will no longer engage in flirtatious discussions with users under 18. Additionally, stricter protocols will be established to manage conversations related to suicide. In instances where underage users explore suicidal thoughts, the chatbot will attempt to notify their parents or, in extreme cases, alert local authorities. This initiative comes in light of a wrongful death lawsuit involving ChatGPT, filed by the parents of Adam Raine, who tragically took his own life after interacting with the AI for several months. The issue of chatbot-induced distress extends beyond just underage users. As AI chatbots grow more sophisticated in their interactions, there are rising concerns regarding the potential for them to foster harmful delusions. To combat these risks, OpenAI is introducing new features that allow parents to set specific “blackout hours” during which ChatGPT will be inaccessible to their children—an option not previously available. These policy changes coincide with a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing titled “Examining the Harm of AI Chatbots,” where Adam Raine’s father is expected to speak. The hearing will also address a Reuters investigation that uncovered documents suggesting policies that could lead to inappropriate interactions with minors, prompting Meta to revise their chatbot guidelines. OpenAI acknowledges the technical difficulties that come with distinguishing between underage and adult users. In a separate blog post, they outlined their commitment to developing a robust system aimed at accurately identifying user age. For parents worried about their child's safety, linking the teen’s account to a parent account will ensure better oversight and timely alerts in distressing situations. Despite these preventative measures, Altman reaffirmed OpenAI’s dedication to maintaining user privacy and allowing adult users the freedom to engage with ChatGPT as they choose. He concluded by recognizing the inherent conflict between privacy and protection, stating, "Not everyone will agree with how we are resolving that conflict." For those in need of immediate support regarding mental health issues, resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Crisis Text Line are available.
