OpenAI’s Sora bans Martin Luther King Jr. deepfakes after his family complained

OpenAI has temporarily suspended the creation of videos featuring Martin Luther King Jr. on its AI video platform, Sora, in response to objections regarding perceived disrespectful representations. The company made this announcement in a statement shared on X, emphasizing that while free speech is important, it believes that public figures and their families should have the final say over how their images are represented. The decision comes shortly after the introduction of Sora 2, a tool that allows users to produce highly realistic AI-generated videos of both contemporary and historical figures. Critics argue that such technologies contribute to a growing issue of misinformation, blurring the lines between reality and fabrication. Concerns have also been raised about the ethical implications of using AI in this manner, particularly as it relates to sensitive figures like King. Instances of inappropriate uses of King's likeness have been noted, as well as other controversial AI recreations, such as those of the late actor Robin Williams, which sparked a strong reaction from his daughter, who deemed them unsettling. OpenAI expressed gratitude to Dr. Bernice A. King for initiating the dialogue on behalf of King, Inc., and acknowledged the importance of discussions around the ethical use of AI technologies. The King Center has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this matter.
