OpenAI's ‘code red’ response to Gemini-3 could arrive next week

In a significant move amidst rising competition, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman has reportedly issued a 'code red' alert internally. This development comes as the company faces increased pressure from competitors such as Google and Anthropic, particularly following the impressive performance of Gemini 3 in recent benchmarks. Nick Turley, OpenAI's Head of ChatGPT, has made it clear that advertisements are not being introduced for the chatbot at this time. However, new insights suggest that OpenAI's strategic response, likely in the form of the much-anticipated GPT-5.2 model, could be unveiled as early as next week. Initially slated for a December launch, the urgency to compete with Gemini 3 has accelerated this timeline, with a potential release date now set for December 9. Despite this aggressive schedule, sources caution that the release of GPT-5.2 may encounter delays due to development hurdles, server capacity challenges, or announcements from competing AI models. An earlier report indicated that OpenAI's next reasoning model was expected to outperform Gemini 3 in internal evaluations. Last month, OpenAI launched the GPT-5.1 model, but the Gemini 3 debut shortly thereafter overshadowed its release. Additionally, OpenAI has faced challenges in image generation and editing capabilities since the introduction of GPT-4's native image generation in March, which had previously sparked a viral trend in Ghibli-style images. On the other hand, Google, which trailed in image generation, has made significant strides with recent models like Nano Banana and Nano Banana Pro, which now lead several benchmarks and offer features that position them favorably against competitors. Following the 'code red' designation, OpenAI is focusing on enhancing user experience with ChatGPT, aiming to introduce improved personalization, increased speed, and broader question-answering capabilities. In the internal memo, Altman also mentioned a strategic shift away from certain initiatives, including the introduction of ads in ChatGPT and the development of AI assistants for health and shopping. Previously, OpenAI had declared a 'code orange' to enhance its offerings. OpenAI's color-coded system indicates the severity of issues, with 'red' representing the highest priority, followed by 'orange' and 'yellow.' As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, all eyes are on OpenAI and its forthcoming developments.
