OpenAI is building an 'integrity team' to prevent ChatGPT ads from going off the rails

In a bid to maintain user trust during the upcoming introduction of advertising in ChatGPT, OpenAI is establishing a dedicated 'ads integrity' team. A recently posted job listing for a software engineer indicates that this team will be built from the ground up, emphasizing the importance of creating robust systems that support OpenAI’s advertising ambitions without compromising safety. This initiative aligns with industry standards, as major tech firms frequently develop teams focused on preventing ad fraud and ensuring brand safety. OpenAI confirmed earlier this year that it plans to begin testing ads within ChatGPT, making the formation of the integrity team a crucial early step in this process. The new hire will be tasked with developing 'know your customer' (KYC) systems, a vital component for verifying the identities of advertisers and assessing potential risks. KYC is a labor-intensive process, essential for mitigating the spread of scam advertisements and harmful content—issues that have been prominent in the tech industry, as highlighted by a recent investigation into Meta’s ad practices. Ariella Garcia, COO of the Check My Ads Institute, noted the importance of OpenAI's commitment to ad integrity, suggesting that while KYC is a solid starting point, the real challenge will be managing the volume of scam ads during the initial rollout. The job listing also mentions that the new team member will influence how and where ads are displayed within ChatGPT, which will be critical as OpenAI seeks to balance paid content with organic responses. OpenAI is preparing to run a small-scale test of ads in both the free and Go tiers of ChatGPT in the U.S., with users expected to see these ads shortly. To participate in the program, advertisers are required to commit a minimum spend of $200,000. OpenAI plans to monitor clicks and impressions and will consider additional measurement options as their advertising initiatives evolve. However, the company has not provided further details regarding the ads integrity position.
