OpenAI unveils “wellness” council; suicide prevention expert not included

In response to concerns raised by a lawsuit alleging that ChatGPT acted as a 'suicide coach' for a teenager, OpenAI is taking significant steps to improve the safety of its AI chatbot. The company has officially introduced its Expert Council on Wellness and AI, which aims to ensure that ChatGPT serves as a healthier tool for users, particularly young ones. The formation of this council follows months of informal consultations with specialists focused on parental controls and youth interactions with technology. OpenAI has assembled a group of eight distinguished experts, each bringing years of research on the impacts of technology on mental health, emotions, and motivation. One key objective of this initiative is to include members who understand how to create technology that fosters healthy development in young users. Notable council members include David Bickham, a research director from Boston Children’s Hospital, who has extensively studied the effects of social media on children's mental health, and Mathilde Cerioli, the chief science officer at Everyone.AI, a nonprofit dedicated to analyzing the risks and opportunities of AI usage among children. Their expertise will help OpenAI address critical issues regarding the potential risks associated with prolonged interactions with AI, particularly for younger users. Bickham has previously highlighted the concept of 'AI psychosis,' where extended conversations with chatbots could lead to mental health challenges for children. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the relationships children form with AI, suggesting that these interactions could impact their learning and emotional development. Cerioli has also raised alarms about the long-term effects of AI on children's cognitive processes, warning that early exposure to accommodating AI could hinder their ability to manage conflicting information. By collaborating with these experts, OpenAI aims to implement effective safeguards that enhance the mental well-being of young users engaging with ChatGPT.
