OpenAI has been temporarily barred from using the term "cameo" in connection with its Sora app following a ruling from a federal judge. U.S. District Judge Eumi K. Lee issued a temporary restraining order that restricts the AI company from employing the "cameo" name or any similar variants, such as "Kameo" or "CameoVideo," for any functionalities tied to the Sora platform. This legal development comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by Cameo, a service that enables users to purchase personalized video messages from celebrities, after OpenAI introduced a feature in Sora called "Cameo." This feature allows users to create characters based on themselves or others and integrate them into videos. Cameo's CEO, Steven Galanis, expressed satisfaction with the court's decision, emphasizing the importance of protecting consumers from potential confusion stemming from OpenAI's use of the trademark. Galanis stated, "We are gratified by the court's decision, which recognizes the need to protect consumers from the confusion that OpenAI has created by using the Cameo trademark." While the order is temporary, Cameo hopes that OpenAI will cease using their trademark entirely to prevent any further public confusion or harm. OpenAI has not yet provided a comment regarding the lawsuit. The restraining order will remain in effect until December 22, with a hearing to determine if the ban will become permanent scheduled for December 19.
