OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has recently deleted all promotional content and blog posts related to its $6.5 billion acquisition of Jonny Ive's AI startup. Initial assumptions might link this move to potential setbacks in the deal; however, reports indicate that the removal is tied to a trademark dispute. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, OpenAI encountered legal issues surrounding the name 'IO.' A federal judge subsequently mandated the removal of all materials that referenced this name. Following this development, OpenAI updated its previous blog post to note that the page is currently unavailable due to a copyright complaint filed by a company named iyO. "This page is temporarily down due to a court order following a trademark complaint from iyO about our use of the name ‘io.’ We don’t agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options," stated OpenAI in the revised blog post. The acquisition of Ive's AI startup was initially announced in May. OpenAI revealed that Ive and his team would collaborate on developing new, undisclosed hardware products. The agreement entails merging Ive's team, which specializes in hardware engineering and software development, with OpenAI's research and engineering departments. The deal is expected to finalize this summer, contingent upon regulatory approvals. Once complete, OpenAI will integrate approximately 55 professionals from Ive's team, a group that aims to create a new line of devices. OpenAI noted that both Ive and CEO Sam Altman had been exploring innovative concepts together for nearly two years. In a separate report from TechCrunch, iyO is described as a generative AI firm that emerged from Alphabet's X “moonshot factory” in 2021. Founded by Jason Rugolo, iyO is focused on providing a screen-free, voice-first computing experience, with its flagship product, the iyO One earbuds, designed to facilitate natural interactions with AI agents for tasks such as music control and information retrieval. A spokesperson for Jonny Ive expressed confidence, stating, "This is an utterly baseless complaint and we’ll fight it vigorously," as reported by Bloomberg.
