OpenAI's chief people officer is leaving the company

In a notable shift within OpenAI, Julia Villagra, the company’s Chief People Officer, is set to depart from her position this Friday. This announcement was made to Business Insider, marking the end of her tenure which began in February 2024 when she took on the role of Head of Human Resources. Villagra's promotion to Chief People Officer was revealed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman earlier this year. Prior to her time at OpenAI, Villagra held a significant role at Hudson River Trading, dedicating nearly 16 years as the head of their people operations. Her recruitment was part of a broader strategy by OpenAI, which had previously attracted several professionals from the quant trading firm. According to reports, Fidji Simo, the recently appointed CEO of Applications at OpenAI, will oversee the hiring of a new Chief People Officer. In the meantime, Jason Kwon, the Chief Strategy Officer, will temporarily take over Villagra's responsibilities. Villagra's departure signifies an ongoing trend of leadership changes within OpenAI, particularly as the competition for top AI talent escalates. Her exit comes shortly after Simo joined the leadership team, tasked with steering the company's consumer and product strategies. In a recent podcast, Altman highlighted the fierce competition in the AI sector, noting that companies like Meta have attempted to lure OpenAI employees with offers reaching up to $100 million in signing bonuses. While Meta characterized its recruitment approach as part of standard organizational planning, the tech giant has recently implemented a hiring freeze in its AI division, indicating a shift in strategy amidst the dynamic landscape of artificial intelligence development.
